ED Leadership and Management Elective at the Brooklyn Hospital

CORE CONTENT

The resident will be exposed to the full spectrum of Administrative Topics (if he/she rotates on an ongoing basis):

  • Corporate Meetings – Mrs. Jones will provide dates of the meetings
  • Participate in recruitment/retention and scheduling
  • ED Management Meetings occurring every Monday 13:00 -15:00
  • Quality Assurance: Research and prepare a response to a Quality Assurance query for the Emergency Department. Dr. Yakobi or your Preceptor will oversee the QA process.
  • ED Clinical Pertinence Review: Schedule at least one afternoon with Dr. Yakobi or your Preceptor to learn how to review ED charts for completion and accuracy. Select ten (10) random ED charts from the EMR and review them. Please attach copies of the ED Clinical Pertinence Review forms. Dr. Yakobi or your Preceptor will evaluate this portion.
  • ED Follow-up Phone Call: Schedule at least one afternoon with Dr. Yakobi or your Preceptor to learn how to make ED Follow-up Phone Calls. Select five (5) random charts and review them. Please attach copies of the ED Follow-up Phone Call forms. Dr. Yakobi/Preceptor will evaluate this portion.
  • Patient Complaint Department: Research and develop a response to two patient complaints.
  • Performance Improvement: Define a problem or frustration of practicing emergency medicine in our ED and develop a written plan for resolving that specific problem. After discussion and presentation to Dr. DeSouza, Dr. Yakobi or your Preceptor of your researched solutions for fixing the operational problem, oversee the steps required to fix the problem. Two (2) residents may be involved in one project if sufficiently complex or time intensive.
  • Patient Satisfaction: Read the two articles which discuss determinants of patient satisfaction in the emergency department.
  • Administrative Meetings: Attend meetings at least once. Mrs. John can provide specific dates and times and advise concerning meeting topics and agendas which may be most relevant to your areas of interest.
    • Emergency Medicine Faculty Meeting: First Thursday of each month at 8:30am, Nina Mazur Conference Room.
    • Emergency Department Clinical Services Committee Meeting: The ED CSC meets every third Thursday of the month at 2:00pm in the Nina Mazur Conference Room.
