TBHC Improves Patient Safety Score Amidst Pandemic Challenges, Earns Second Highest Grade in Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) was the only hospital in the borough to raise its patient safety grade from Fall 2021 to Spring 2022, despite the complications caused by COVID-19 and the latest surge in cases. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade awarded Brooklyn’s only “B” to TBHC, making it the second highest patient safety score in the borough.

In Brooklyn, seven hospitals received D grades, four got Cs, and one hospital got an A, with TBHC’s “B” earning the second highest grade.

“We are committed to Keeping Brooklyn Healthy,” said TBHC President and CEO, Gary G. Terrinoni. “We will always put patient safety first, and are constantly re-evaluating and improving our practices to provide the best services that we can for our community.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns a letter grade to nearly 3,000 U.S. general hospitals based on over 30 measures of patient safety. Taken together, those performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring, and are based on a peer-reviewed methodology, calculated by top patient safety experts under the guidance of a National Expert Panel.
