The Brooklyn Hospital Center is Awarded Colorectal Cancer Screening Access Grant

We’re pleased to announce that The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) has been awarded a grant from Exact Sciences' FOCUS Program. TBHC is one of 28 organizations sharing $1.5 million to improve colorectal cancer screening rates and make healthcare more accessible for underserved communities.

Exact Sciences, a leader in cancer screening and diagnostic tests, launched the FOCUS Program in 2022 to increase screening. Since then, the program has awarded over $4.5 million to more than 75 organizations across the U.S., creating a lasting impact.

Colorectal cancer is highly preventable and treatable if caught early, yet 60 million average-risk adults in the U.S. remain unscreened. This leads to more than 50,000 deaths each year. Screening disparities are especially significant among racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and geographic groups, making colorectal cancer the second-leading cause of cancer death in the country.

“We are delighted to receive this grant. It will enable us to reach more people in our community and provide them with life-saving screenings," says Sheila Anane, Vice President of Ambulatory and Quality Service at TBHC. "Early detection is crucial, and this funding will help us ensure that more Brooklyn residents have access to these vital services."

With this grant, TBHC will implement strategies to increase colorectal cancer screening rates among underserved populations in Brooklyn. The funding will support community outreach, education and screening services, aiming to reduce the incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer in our area.

To learn more about our services and other screening capabilities or to schedule an appointment, please call 718-250-7990 or visit tbh.org.
