What is medical detoxification?

The first step toward a new life. Congratulations, you decided to leave substance abuse behind. With hard work and dedication, drugs and alcohol will become part of your past, not your future. The future belongs only to you.

Before rehabilitation, you may first need a three- to seven-day stay in a hospital-based, medically managed detoxification program. The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) provides such a program. When someone has developed significant dependence to one or more substances, an abrupt reduction or stopping of their use can lead to a range of challenging mental and physical symptoms. Medical detoxification serves as a safe and private way to address the withdrawal process where you will be provided comfort care, medications and support.

Your care during this short but critical period will be highly personalized because no two addictions are exactly the same. You may be dependent on any number of substances or a cocktail of substances. The TBHC hospital-based program offers detoxification for these and other substances:

  • Alcohol
  • Opiates (codeine, heroin, Percocet, Oxycodone, Fentanyl)
  • Benzodiazepines (Benzo)
  • Pain medications
  • Amphetamines (uppers)
  • Barbiturates or sedatives (downers)

What can I expect?

A moment of calm where healing begins. You may respond to medical detoxification in different ways than another person. Rest assured, TBHC’s interdisciplinary team is ready to help you whatever your experience. Key things to know:

  • We are licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS-OASAS). Our certified counselors and medical staff provide comprehensive bio-psychosocial and medical treatment to chemically dependent individuals.
  • Your care team is led by a New York State-licensed alcohol and substance abuse counselor who will guide you every day you’re here. Other team members include medical doctors, registered nurses, individual and group counselors, and nutritionists.
  • Registered nurses will supervise your care 24 hours a day.
  • The detox unit has quiet, semi-private rooms with amenities. The wing is located away from other units on its own floor. At all times, we protect your privacy.
  • While you’re with us, you may also take advantage of these and other counseling and education programs:
    • Individual and group therapy
    • Relapse prevention
    • Art therapy
    • Multifaith pastoral care

Finally, when your stay at TBHC is complete, our counselors will help you build an aftercare plan and find a rehabilitation program suitable for you and your next steps toward recovery.
