New Surgery Appointments at The Brooklyn Hospital Center

The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) proudly announces the appointment of Nelson Menezes, MD, as the Interim Chair of Surgery. A highly respected leader and educator, Dr. Menezes brings decades of clinical and administrative experience to this role. He was appointed Chief of Vascular Surgery in 1998 and has been an integral part of TBHC’s surgical team ever since. Under his leadership, the hospital successfully transitioned from traditional. open surgical techniques to advanced endovascular procedures, significantly enhancing patient care and outcomes.

Dr. Menezes earned his medical degree from Goa Medical College in India and completed surgical training in England before moving to the United States. He undertook a surgical residency at TBHC and completed specialized fellowships in endovascular surgery at The Baptist Memorial Center in Memphis, TN, and vascular surgery at SUNY Stony Brook. Board certified in both general and vascular surgery, Dr. Menezes is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In addition to his clinical practice, he serves as the medical director of TBHC’s Vascular Lab and has been deeply involved in resident education and research, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Menezes is well regarded for his mentorship, having guided many surgical residents who have gone on to achieve distinguished careers in academic and vascular surgery. His dedication to advancing surgical care has earned him prestigious honors, including the Distinguished Service Award from TBHC’s professional staff in 2007 and the Walter Reed Medal in 2018.

As Interim Chair of Surgery, Dr. Menezes will oversee the surgical department, ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality patient care, fostering innovation, and supporting the professional growth of the surgical team. His leadership comes at a pivotal time, and TBHC is confident in his ability to guide the department effectively.

Additional Leadership Appointments

  • Luca Milone, MD, to Chief of General Surgery. Dr. Milone is also Co-Director of Robotic Surgery, where he champions providing patients access to the highest level of care with the latest technology. Dr. Milone has authored more than 100 publications and holds an approved U.S. patent for a robotic device designed for endoscopic surgery. After completing his surgery training at the Università di Genova in Italy and earning the Italian Board of Surgery Certification, Dr. Milone completed his surgical residency at TBHC. He further honed his expertise through a research fellowship in laparoscopic surgery at New York–Presbyterian Hospital and two clinical fellowships in minimally invasive and robotic surgery and robotic transplant surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Milone is board certified in surgery and is a leader in advancing robotic and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
  • Peter Einersen, MD, to new Chief of Bariatric Surgery and Co-Director of Robotic Surgery. Dr. Einersen brings extensive experience to TBHC’s bariatric program. He earned his medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Colorado-Denver, Department of Surgery, followed by a fellowship in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Einersen is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for patients undergoing weight-loss surgery and is committed to expanding and enhancing the hospital’s bariatric services, which he performs robotically and minimally invasively.
