The PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency Program in Ambulatory Care is designed to train post-graduate pharmacists to the highest level of ambulatory care pharmacotherapy, built on the foundation of our former PGY-1 Ambulatory Care Emphasis residency program. One PGY-2 Pharmacy Resident will spend an intense year working with the best pharmacotherapists, pharmacists, pharmacy managers and physicians to collaboratively provide Ambulatory care for the diverse patient population of Downtown Brooklyn, New York.
The hospital outpatient department provides comprehensive care to the community with a variety of specialty clinics. The Pharmacotherapy Division is ever present in the outpatient department with an array of services, working with both Internal Medicine and Family Medicine physicians. The hospital’s outpatient services extend into several specialty practices, as well as several off-site clinics.
The Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Resident (PGY-2), working with four Ambulatory Care Pharmacotherapists, will have a strong emphasis in ambulatory care with ten months of outpatient activity and two months of inpatient rotations. Residents receive training in physical assessment, charting, and providing direct patient care while practicing in the following Collaborate Disease State Management Clinics.
- Anticoagulation
- Asthma
- Cardiovascular Risk Reduction
- Smoking Cessation
- HIV Patient Counseling
As a component of the inpatient experience, the resident will be responsible for responding to cardiac arrest, pediatric emergencies, as well as to provide drug information, toxicology consultation, pharmacokinetic dosing consults within the institution as part of the program’s in-house on-call program. This will require the resident to remain in the hospital for a 24 hour period approximately once every 1-2 weeks.
Each resident will also design and implement a research project during the one-year program. The design of this project and the results will be presented at major pharmacy meetings, locally and nationally. In addition, residents have the opportunity to precept entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy students on clinical rotations and to teach a variety of laboratory and recitation courses at the College of Pharmacy.
Residents are eligible to receive a competitive salary and benefits package, including vacation leave, sick leave, medical and dental insurance and a travel allowance for professional meetings.
